What is Integrative Dentistry

Transforming Dentistry to Restore Health — Not Just Teeth.

It Is Not a Trend. It Is Where the Science Has Been Pointing for 30 Years.

Integrative dentistry is the practice of treating the mouth as what it actually is — the gateway to the rest of the body. It draws on the documented, peer-reviewed connection between oral health and systemic disease, and it gives practitioners the tools, the protocols, and the framework to intervene at the source rather than manage the symptoms.

It is sometimes called holistic dentistry. Sometimes biological dentistry. The terminology varies, but the conviction is the same: the mouth does not exist in isolation, and neither should the dentist who treats it.

Six Beliefs Every Integrative Dentist Lives By.

These aren’t fringe ideas. They are the clinical realities that decades of research have confirmed — and that conventional dental school simply never taught you.

Belief 1

The gut microbiome lives in the mouth first.Every swallow carries the oral microbiome directly downstream. Dysbiosis in the mouth creates dysbiosis in the gut — and the cascading health effects are enormous. Saliva testing, DNA panels, and oral microbiome reset protocols are functional medicine at its most direct source.

Belief 2

Disease in the mouth means disease in the body.Periodontal inflammation produces cytokines that enter systemic circulation and fuel chronic disease throughout the body. Treat it like the medical event it is — with labs, diagnostics, and a whole-body personalizing dental treatment plan, not just a periodontal maintenance appointment.

Belief 3

Only biocompatible materials belong in the body.
Every restoration becomes part of a patient’s biology. Materials placed in the mouth should support health, not challenge it. Biocompatible ceramics, zirconia, and non-toxic restorative materials reduce inflammatory burden, eliminate unnecessary exposure to questionable substances, and create a foundation for long-term wellness. Integrative dentistry chooses materials based not only on durability and aesthetics, but on how they interact with the entire human system.

Belief 4

Microbes don’t belong in the jawbones.
Chronic infections can hide deep within the jawbone for years without pain, swelling, or obvious symptoms. These silent microbial reservoirs can continuously stimulate the immune system, contribute to systemic inflammation, and interfere with healing throughout the body. Advanced imaging, biological diagnostics, and precision treatment allow integrative dentists to identify and address these hidden infections at their source—because true health requires eliminating chronic inflammation wherever it lives.

Belief 5

No metal toxins in the mouth.Mercury releases vapor with every bite, crosses the blood-brain barrier, and accumulates in tissue over a lifetime. There are better materials. Integrative dentists use them — and remove what was placed before with precision and biological safety protocols.

Belief 6

Sleep and airway are dental problems.Grinding. Jaw recession. Narrow palate. These signs appear in the mouth long before sleep apnea is diagnosed anywhere else. The dentist who can identify and address airway obstruction is actively reducing their patient’s risk of stroke, hypertension, and early death.
